De verkiezingsstrijd in Spanje is in volle gang, als op 11 maart 2004 tijdens de ochtendspits elf rugzakbommen ontploffen in volgepakte treinen tussen de voorstad Alcala de Henares en Atocha in Madrid. Premier Aznar wijst onmiddellijk met een beschuldigende vinger naar de ETA. Maar twee dagen later wordt een groepje Marokkanen opgepakt. Ze worden beschuldigd van betrokkenheid bij de aanslagen, die een wraakactie zouden zijn voor de aanwezigheid van Spaanse troepen in Irak. In heel Spanje gaan miljoenen mensen de straat op om tekst en uitleg van Aznar te eisen. De socialistische oppositiepartij PSOE spint garen bij het oproer: met de belofte dat ze de troepen uit Irak zal terugtrekken, wint de PSOE de verkiezingen van 14 maart. Luis Rodriguez Zapatero wordt de nieuwe premier van Spanje.
