The Drowsy Chaperone is a musical that premiered in 1998 at the Toronto Fringe Festival and later on Broadway in 2006. The story concerns a middle-aged, asocial musical theater fan who, feeling "blue", decides to play for the audience an LP of his favorite musical, the fictional 1928 show The Drowsy Chaperone. The musical is an homage to American musicals of the Jazz Age, examining the effect musicals have on the fans who adore them
